PatternX vs Trade Ideas: momentum scanning, automation and pricing compared

By the PatternX team · Published

Trade Ideas is a US stock scanner centred on momentum and premarket trading, with Holly AI signals and Auto Trading listed on its Premium plan. PatternX is built around 20 chart patterns across crypto exchanges and brokers, with a risk check before every order and a stop at the venue; its premarket tool, Momentum Lab, is narrower (three strategies, US stocks via IBKR or Alpaca) and Elite-only.

The short version

Trade Ideas and PatternX start from different questions. Trade Ideas describes itself as real-time AI stock scanning with automated trades, entry and exit signals and trade alerts, aimed at active US stock traders, and momentum and premarket scanning are its core focus: finding the US stocks that are moving now. PatternX asks whether a chart pattern has just broken out on a symbol you track, across crypto, US stocks, ETFs and FX, and then handles the trade under fixed risk rules.

Both can trade automatically. Trade Ideas does it through Brokerage Plus, which offers one-click and automated order entry with Interactive Brokers, Alpaca, TradeStation and E*TRADE; PatternX does it through its own exchange and broker connections. PatternX’s premarket tool, Momentum Lab, overlaps most with Trade Ideas, but it is much narrower in scope.

Where Trade Ideas is stronger

  • US momentum scanning. Trade Ideas provides data from about 4:00 a.m. Eastern, premarket gapper and momentum channels, and hundreds of pre-built scan templates, and its comparison page cites coverage of 8,000+ US stocks. PatternX’s pattern engine works from a curated list that includes 123 US stocks, and Momentum Lab works from mover lists of 50 gainers and 50 losers per data source, refreshed every 15 seconds.
  • Holly. Trade Ideas’ AI signal service on the Premium plan gives real-time entry and exit suggestions. Trade Ideas says Holly backtests its 60+ strategies every night and chooses which to use the next day based on the results.
  • Alert backtesting. OddsMaker, also on Premium, is an event-based, no-code backtester for scanner alerts.
  • Alert variety. Built-in scanner alerts include chart patterns PatternX doesn’t detect, such as broadening tops and bottoms, alongside candlestick-pattern alerts.
  • Broker automation. Brokerage Plus automates order entry at TradeStation and E*TRADE as well as Interactive Brokers and Alpaca, and includes a simulator. In PatternX, TradeStation is signals-only: you place the trade yourself.

Where PatternX is different

Chart patterns at the centre

PatternX’s 20 detectors use explicit geometry. An ascending triangle, for instance, needs at least two swing highs within 1.2% of each other and at least two rising lows, and its height must have narrowed to 72% or less of where it started. Every match is then scored by the 13-factor PatternX Score, which includes a higher-timeframe check. In Trade Ideas, chart patterns are one family of scanner alerts among many.

Markets beyond US stocks

PatternX trades crypto on 40 exchanges and reaches FX through OANDA, Saxo and IG, alongside US stocks and ETFs through brokers such as Interactive Brokers, Alpaca and Tradier. Trade Ideas covers US stocks, ETFs through symbol lists and limited Canadian and options-volume data, and its help center states that forex isn’t supported.

Risk rules and venue stops

Every PatternX order passes a risk check first, including a pattern-day-trader guard that, by default, blocks a fourth same-day round trip within five business days on US margin accounts under $25,000. After each live fill the stop goes to the venue, and if the venue refuses it the position is closed at market.

Momentum Lab’s documented rules

Momentum Lab runs three strategies, Premarket Momentum Breakout, Momentum Reversal and Opening Momentum Continuation, with every default published in the Momentum Lab guide. For example, with defaults, a stock that closed at $10.00 arms the breakout strategy at $10.30 (+3%), triggers at $10.50 (+5%) after one confirming tick, and is skipped if PatternX first sees it above $10.80 (+8%). A market-cap minimum is mandatory ($500 million by default), circuit breakers block new entries after a 3% daily loss or 4 consecutive losses, and a kill switch blocks new entries and can also close open positions. The optional AI filter, off by default, is a fixed weighted formula that can only skip or rank candidates.

Pricing compared

Trade Ideas lists two plans: TI Standard at $127 a month or $1,068 a year, and TI Premium at $254 a month or $2,136 a year. Holly, OddsMaker and Auto Trading are listed on Premium. A free account gives delayed data, and full trials run as periodic paid "Test Drive" events.

PatternX runs from a free plan through Starter ($69 a month), Pro ($119) and Elite ($299, or $2,870 a year). Momentum Lab needs Elite, and a one-time $9.99 pass gives 7 days of Elite to try it; the pass works once per account, can’t be added on top of an active paid plan and doesn’t renew.

So for premarket momentum, the closest pairing is TI Premium at $254 a month against PatternX Elite at $299, or $2,136 against $2,870 a year. For chart-pattern trading without Momentum Lab, PatternX’s Starter and Pro plans are listed below TI Standard’s $127. Details are on the pricing page.

Who should choose which

  • Trade Ideas fits active US stock day traders who want many premarket and intraday scans, AI-selected strategy signals and alert backtesting, with automated entry at a broker it supports.
  • PatternX fits traders whose method is built on chart patterns, who trade crypto or FX as well as US stocks, or who want risk limits and venue stops in the same system that finds the trade. Momentum Lab suits Elite users who want three transparent premarket strategies executed through IBKR or Alpaca.

PatternX limitations to know

  • Momentum Lab is narrow. It quotes the top 15 movers per side and adds at most 25 new candidates per strategy per cycle, so it is not a whole-market scanner.
  • It is Elite-only and US-only, executing through IBKR or Alpaca, or in paper mode.
  • Data depends on the source. Relative volume is only available with IBKR data and isn’t adjusted for time of day; IBKR supplies no VWAP; Alpaca’s free IEX feed starts premarket at 08:00 rather than 04:00.
  • A trail is not a maximum loss. Gaps, spreads, slippage and partial fills can push a loss past the trail or the 3% default hard stop, and paper fills are kinder than real ones.
  • The pattern engine sees only your tracked symbols, each through a fixed lookback window, so setups elsewhere or larger than the window go unseen.
  • No options trading, and no charting suite or social network.

Frequently asked questions

Is PatternX a Trade Ideas alternative?

Only partly for US stock momentum: Momentum Lab runs three strategies on premarket movers, while Trade Ideas offers hundreds of scan templates and Holly. For chart-pattern trading across crypto, US stocks, ETFs and FX with built-in risk limits, PatternX covers markets beyond the US stock focus Trade Ideas describes.

Can Trade Ideas place trades automatically?

Yes. Trade Ideas’ Brokerage Plus offers one-click and automated order entry through Interactive Brokers, Alpaca, TradeStation and E*TRADE, plus a simulator, and its pricing lists Auto Trading on the Premium plan.

How is Holly different from PatternX AI?

Holly is a signal service: Trade Ideas says it backtests 60+ strategies nightly and suggests real-time entries and exits from the ones it selects. PatternX AI doesn’t generate trades; it re-checks setups the pattern engine has already found against 8 fixed market-context factors and can veto them or adjust their confidence.

Does PatternX have a premarket scanner like Trade Ideas?

The closest equivalent is Momentum Lab, which on Elite watches premarket gainers and losers in US stocks and can trade three strategies through IBKR or Alpaca. Every candidate must also clear a market-cap minimum, $500 million by default, and a stock whose market cap is unknown is skipped rather than traded.

Which markets does each cover?

Trade Ideas covers US stocks (8,000+, per its comparison page), ETFs via symbol lists and limited Canadian and options-volume data; its help center says forex isn’t supported. PatternX covers crypto on 40 exchanges plus a curated list of 309 US stocks, ETFs and FX instruments through brokers.
