Premarket trading

By the PatternX team · Published

Definition

Premarket trading is buying and selling stocks before the regular session opens. In US equities it can start as early as 04:00 New York time and runs until the 09:30 open, typically with fewer participants, wider spreads and sharper swings than later in the day.

Also called: pre-market

How it works

Premarket is the morning half of extended-hours trading. Orders are matched electronically, just as during the day, but far fewer traders are active. Brokers set their own rules: some open their premarket window later than 04:00, and many accept only limit orders outside regular hours. Premarket prices are real trades, but they're set by a small group of buyers and sellers and can change sharply at 09:30, when the full market arrives.

Why it matters

Premarket is where overnight news first gets priced: earnings, guidance, filings, offerings and analyst changes. The move from the previous close becomes the opening gap, and many intraday traders mark the premarket high and low as reference levels for the session.

The trade-off is execution quality. With thin books, the spread can be several times wider than at midday, a modest order can move the price, and a quote can disappear before your order arrives. The guide to premarket liquidity and spreads goes into this in depth.

Example

For example, a hypothetical stock closes at $20.00 and reports earnings overnight. At 07:30 it trades at $21.50 on 40,000 shares, quoted $21.40 bid and $21.65 ask, a spread of about 1.2% of the midpoint. At 09:30 it could open at $22.30 or at $20.90. The premarket price was a real trade, not a forecast of the open.

Common mistakes

  • Sending market orders into a thin book.
  • Treating a premarket high made on a few hundred shares as a firm level.
  • Forgetting that data feeds differ: some cover a single exchange or start later in the morning.

How PatternX uses it

Momentum Lab defines premarket as 04:00–09:30 New York time, followed by the regular session (09:30–16:00) and after-hours (16:00–20:00). Premarket Momentum Breakout is active in premarket by default; Opening Momentum Continuation qualifies a stock in premarket but only enters once the regular session opens. Premarket data starts at 04:00 with IBKR or Alpaca's SIP feed, but only at 08:00 with Alpaca's free IEX feed. Default filters require at least 50,000 shares of premarket volume (100,000 for Momentum Reversal) and $250,000 of premarket dollar volume. For the strategy side, see premarket momentum.
