PatternX vs TradingView: chart patterns, automation and pricing compared

By the PatternX team · Published

Short answer

TradingView is a broad charting platform and social network; it lists "Auto chart patterns" on its Premium and Ultimate plans, and per its own support docs automated strategy trading with a brokerage account isn’t available. PatternX is narrower: it detects 20 chart patterns on the symbols you track and can trade them, with a risk check before every order and a stop placed at the exchange or broker after each live fill.

The short version

TradingView and PatternX overlap less than a feature checklist suggests. TradingView describes itself as a charting platform and social network: a place to chart, screen, script and share ideas across stocks, funds, crypto, forex, futures, options, bonds and indices. PatternX does one narrower job from start to finish. It watches the symbols you choose for 20 chart patterns, scores each breakout, checks the trade against your risk limits and, if you allow it, places the order at your exchange or broker.

The clearest dividing line is execution. Per TradingView’s support article on autotrading, strategy trading there is limited to backtesting, automated strategy trading with a brokerage account isn’t available, and Pine Script can’t place orders directly. You can trade by hand from the chart through integrated brokers, and webhook alerts (Essential plan and above) can drive external tools. PatternX does the order step itself, either after you approve a signal or automatically.

Where TradingView is stronger

For a lot of trading work, TradingView is the better-equipped product:

  • Charting and analysis. TradingView is a charting platform first, aimed at traders who want advanced charting. PatternX is not a charting suite, so if your process depends on studying charts yourself, TradingView covers that and PatternX doesn’t.
  • Community. TradingView lists more than 100,000 community indicators written in Pine Script, and the platform has a social side. PatternX has nothing comparable.
  • Market breadth. TradingView’s data coverage includes options, bonds and indices as well as stocks, funds, crypto, forex and futures. PatternX covers crypto plus a curated list of 309 traditional instruments.
  • Pattern tools on the chart. The built-in All Chart Patterns indicator finds 16 chart patterns, and candlestick pattern recognition is listed on every plan. The pattern lists overlap heavily: TradingView’s includes an inverse cup and handle, which PatternX doesn’t detect, while PatternX adds rounding tops and bottoms.
  • Backtesting depth. Pine Script strategies run in the Strategy Tester, Bar Replay is on all plans, and deep backtesting with tick-level fills comes with Premium and above.
  • Screening. Pre-market gainers, losers, gap and most-active lists, after-hours and unusual-volume lists, a screener that auto-refreshes every 10 seconds or 1 minute on paid plans, and an AI Screener in public beta that turns plain-language requests into filters.
  • Entry price. Basic is free and paid plans start at $14.95 a month, billed monthly.

Where PatternX is different

Detection wired to execution

In PatternX a detected pattern is the start of a pipeline. All 20 rule-based detectors run on every scan, matches must pass market filters for volume, liquidity, spread and volatility, and the PatternX Score rates each one from 0 to 100 using 13 weighted factors. Anything under your minimum confidence, 65 by default, is dropped. In manual mode, the default, a signal waits up to 15 minutes for your approval in the app or through Telegram; in auto mode it executes without approval but still passes the full risk check. New connections start in paper trading.

A risk engine before every order

With default settings PatternX allows at most 3 open crypto and 3 open traditional trades, enforces a daily loss limit of 10% of the balance, benches a symbol after 5 losing trades on it in a day, and pauses for 60 minutes after 3 losses in a row. Plan quotas, kill switches and a pattern-day-trader guard for US margin accounts under $25,000 sit on top, and position size defaults to risking 1% of the balance over the stop distance. The full list is in risk controls.

Stops that rest at the venue

After a live fill, PatternX places the stop-loss at the exchange or broker using that venue’s own mechanism, such as a reduce-only trigger order on most crypto exchanges or a stop with an OCO take-profit at Interactive Brokers, with up to 3 attempts. If the venue refuses the stop, PatternX closes the position at market and alerts you. The exception is trailing stops and break-even moves: PatternX’s software loop manages them, so they only work while PatternX is running and can reach the venue.

Venues and Momentum Lab

PatternX connects to 40 crypto exchanges, 8 of them spot-only for data, paper and manual use, and to 13 brokers. Six brokers are automated through their APIs (Interactive Brokers, Alpaca, OANDA, Saxo, Tradier and IG); the other seven, including Robinhood and Charles Schwab, are signals-only. On Elite, Momentum Lab adds three premarket and opening strategies for US stocks, executed through IBKR or Alpaca. TradingView’s pre-market lists show you the movers; Momentum Lab is built to act on premarket movers under its own circuit breakers and kill switch.

Paying yearly20% off: $55, $95 or $239 a month"Save up to 17%"

The prices don’t buy the same thing. On TradingView, "Auto chart patterns" appears from Premium upward, webhook alerts from Essential upward, real-time data packages cost extra, and, per its docs, automated strategy trading with a broker isn’t available on TradingView itself. On PatternX, pattern detection and trading come with every plan, Free included; the price sets how many instruments you track (3, 20, 100 or unlimited), how often they’re rescanned (every 120, 60, 30 or 10 seconds), the daily trade quota (2, 20, 100 or unlimited) and access to backtesting, PatternX AI and Momentum Lab. Starter has a 48-hour free trial, and a one-time $9.99 pass gives 7 days of Elite. Plan details are on the pricing page.

Who should choose which

  • TradingView fits if most of your work is analysis: studying charts, using or writing Pine Script, following other traders, or covering options and bonds alongside stocks and crypto.
  • PatternX fits if you want a fixed set of chart patterns watched on your own symbol list and acted on under explicit risk rules, particularly if you trade crypto across several exchanges or use one of its API brokers.
  • Both together can make sense: TradingView for open-ended research, PatternX for the repetitive scanning and order handling. They don’t need to be connected for that.

PatternX limitations to know

  • It isn’t a charting suite or a social network. You’ll still want a charting tool for open-ended analysis.
  • It only sees what you track: up to 3 instruments on Free, 20 on Starter, 100 on Pro and unlimited on Elite, on timeframes from 1 minute to 1 day, rescanned every 10 to 120 seconds. It doesn’t sweep the whole market.
  • Each detector looks back over a fixed window, for example 80 bars for a cup and handle and 110 for a triple top. A formation larger than its window isn’t detected, however clear it looks on a zoomed-out chart.
  • Breakouts are read on the latest bar, which may still be forming, so a breakout can fade before the bar finishes.
  • No options trading. Traditional coverage is a curated list of US stocks, ETFs, leveraged and inverse ETFs, Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, and FX pairs including gold and silver.
  • Momentum Lab is Elite-only and limited to US stocks traded through IBKR or Alpaca.

Frequently asked questions

Is PatternX a TradingView alternative?

Partly. PatternX can take over the pattern-spotting and order-placing part of a workflow, but it isn’t a charting suite or social network, so it doesn’t replace TradingView’s charts, Pine Script community or market coverage.

Can TradingView trade chart patterns automatically?

Not by itself, according to TradingView’s support article: automated strategy trading with a brokerage account isn’t available there, and Pine Script can’t place orders directly. Its webhook alerts, on Essential and above, can drive external tools instead.

Which TradingView plans include automatic chart patterns?

TradingView lists "Auto chart patterns" on its Premium and Ultimate plans, which cost $69.95 and $239.95 a month billed monthly when we checked on October 5, 2026. Its pages also describe a built-in All Chart Patterns indicator covering 16 patterns.

Does PatternX cover the same markets as TradingView?

No. PatternX covers crypto on 40 exchanges plus 309 curated US stocks, ETFs and FX instruments through brokers, and doesn’t trade options; TradingView’s data coverage also includes options, bonds and indices.

How do the AI features compare?

TradingView’s AI Screener turns plain-language requests into screener filters, and its paid AI Copilot add-on can operate charts, alerts, watchlists and Pine Script. PatternX AI is a fixed 8-factor context check that runs after a pattern is detected and can veto it or re-weight its confidence; it never detects patterns itself.
