Getting started

The first hour on PatternX.

What does PatternX actually do?
PatternX continuously scans the markets you track for high-probability chart patterns (double tops/bottoms, head & shoulders, flags, wedges, triangles, cup & handle). When a pattern completes with confirmation, it produces a scored signal with an entry, take-profit and stop-loss. Depending on your mode it either waits for your approval or auto-executes through your connected exchange/broker. Pattern detection, risk sizing and execution are all deterministic — the AI layer only explains and analyses, it never decides trades.
Do I need to fund an account to try it?
No. Every connection can run in Paper mode, which simulates fills at real market prices against a virtual $10,000 balance — nothing is ever sent to the exchange. Use paper to learn the platform risk-free, then switch a connection to Live when you're ready.
What are the steps from sign-up to first trade?
(1) Create an account and verify your email. (2) Connect an exchange or broker (Exchange Connections). (3) Run the connection test, then the test trade. (4) In Settings, pick your tracked markets, timeframes, patterns and risk rules. (5) Turn the scanner on. Signals then appear in Live Signals / Approvals. Start in Paper mode; switch to Live when your test trade passes.

Trading Modes — Classic vs AI

Two ways to trade the same 20-pattern engine.

What is the difference between PatternX Classic and PatternX AI?
Both modes scan all 20 chart patterns with the exact same deterministic engine — the only difference is how each detected opportunity is evaluated. PatternX Classic (Stable · Deterministic) produces trades purely from deterministic logic, scoring and risk rules — no AI participates in trade selection. PatternX AI (AI Enhanced · Recommended) runs that same deterministic engine first, then adds an AI intelligence layer that evaluates each genuine opportunity across trend strength, market structure, volatility regime, volume quality, momentum, confluence, historical similarity and sentiment.
Does AI invent trades or override my risk settings?
No — and this is by design. The AI layer never invents signals, never creates patterns and never bypasses risk management. It only works on opportunities the deterministic engine has already detected and confirmed. It can refine the confidence (within a bounded band, never below your minimum-confidence floor), rank opportunities, filter out weak ones and write a professional explanation. Detection, sizing and execution stay deterministic in both modes.
Which mode am I on, and how do I switch?
Existing accounts are on PatternX Classic by default — nothing about your setup changes until you deliberately switch. Change modes anytime from the Trading Mode selector on your Dashboard or in Settings. The switch is account-wide and takes effect on the next scan.
Which plans include PatternX AI, and are there limits?
PatternX AI is available on Pro and Elite. On Pro, AI mode runs up to 5 AI trades per day; on Elite it is unlimited. PatternX Classic is included on every plan (including Free) with your normal daily limits. Both modes always scan all 20 patterns — the difference is the AI evaluation layer.
Is AI mode less transparent than Classic?
No. The AI layer is explainable, not a black box — it exposes its factor-by-factor breakdown and a written rationale for every opportunity, on top of the same deterministic PatternX Score you get in Classic. You always see why a signal earned its rating.

Connecting exchanges & brokers

Crypto venues and traditional brokers.

Which exchanges and brokers are supported?
40 crypto venues (Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, KuCoin, Gate, HTX, MEXC, Kraken, Coinbase, Deribit, Hyperliquid, dYdX, BitMEX, Bitfinex, WOO X, BloFin, Bitstamp, Gemini and more) and 13 traditional brokers (Interactive Brokers, Alpaca, Tradier, Saxo, IG, OANDA, eToro, Plus500, Webull, Robinhood, TradeStation, Charles Schwab, CMC Markets) covering US stocks, ETFs, forex and CFDs. See the connection guide for the exact steps per venue.
Are my API keys safe? Can PatternX withdraw my funds?
Keys are encrypted at rest and only used to read data and place trades. Always create keys with withdrawals disabled — PatternX explicitly refuses to enable Live mode on a key that has withdrawal permission, and broker trading sessions cannot move money out by design. We never see your exchange password or login, only the API key you paste.
My connection tests OK but the balance shows 0 or is wrong.
Usually the key is for the wrong wallet/account type (e.g. Spot key on a Futures venue), or funds sit in a sub-account the key can't see. On USDC-margined venues (Hyperliquid) make sure your collateral is in the perps wallet. Balances are cached for ~30s — give it a moment after connecting. If it persists, re-check which account the key belongs to.
Connection keeps dropping to “disconnected”.
The exchange rejected a request — most often an expired/rotated key, an IP allow-list that doesn't include our servers, or (for brokers) a session token that expired. Re-test the connection; if it fails, re-issue the key. Saxo developer tokens expire every 24h; IG/IBKR sessions need the gateway logged in.

Interactive Brokers & traditional markets

The broker-specific details that trip people up.

I connected an IBKR PAPER account. Which mode do I use to trade it?
Set the PatternX connection to LIVE mode. This sounds backwards, but there are two separate “paper” concepts: PatternX Paper mode simulates internally and never contacts IBKR, while IBKR's paper account (the DU… account) is IBKR's own simulator. To place real API orders into IBKR's simulator you use PatternX Live mode — “Live” just means “really send the order through the API.” With a DU account, those orders execute against fake money. It's the correct way to fully test the pipeline with zero real money.
The IBKR test trade fails or the scanner finds nothing.
Two common causes. (1) Market hours — stocks only trade while the exchange is open; a test order placed after hours won't fill (we detect this and report it rather than failing). (2) Market-data entitlements — a bare IBKR paper account may have no real-time data, so live quotes read as “no data.” Orders still work during market hours regardless. Make sure your Client Portal Gateway is running and authenticated (IBeam automates this), then re-run the test while the US market is open.
Do stock/forex trades run 24/7 like crypto?
No. US stocks and ETFs trade during exchange hours (roughly 9:30–16:00 ET, no weekends/holidays); forex runs about 24 hours, 5 days a week. The scanner still analyses historical candles out of hours, but new fills only happen when the market is open. Crypto is the only truly 24/7 market on the platform.
Why do stocks use different TP/SL than my crypto settings?
Because they move very differently — a 10% take-profit that's normal on a perp is enormous on Apple. Traditional markets have their own conservative defaults (TP 4% / SL 2% / 2× leverage) under the Settings → Risk → Traditional markets tab. Edit them there; they apply to every broker trade.

The scanner & signals

Why signals do (and don’t) appear.

The scanner is on but I have no signals. Is it broken?
Usually not. Patterns are selective — quiet stretches are normal, and a strict confidence threshold means fewer, higher-quality signals. Check the scanner strip on the Overview: it shows how many pairs are being watched, the last sweep time and any rate-limit backoff. If it says the engine isn't reporting in, the background worker isn't running (see below). Lower your minimum confidence or track more markets/timeframes to see more.
A signal was rejected — why, if I didn’t reject it?
The risk engine blocked execution and recorded the reason on the signal. Common ones: below your minimum balance, max open/daily trades reached, daily-loss circuit breaker tripped, a per-symbol bench after repeated losses, cooldown after a losing streak, or not enough free margin. Open the signal to see the exact reason.
What’s the difference between a signal’s confidence and the PatternX Score?
Confidence is the raw pattern-match quality; the PatternX Score is a weighted composite that also factors trend alignment, volume confirmation, liquidity, spread, order-book balance and historical win-rate. The score is what you should judge a setup on.
Can I see the pattern drawn on the chart?
Yes — open a signal and expand “Chart at detection.” For double tops/bottoms and head & shoulders the neckline and the key pivots are drawn on the frozen detection snapshot.

Paper, live & execution

How trades actually get placed.

What’s the difference between Paper and Live mode?
Paper simulates fills at live prices against a virtual balance — no order ever reaches the exchange. Live sends real orders through your connection. Live also requires the platform-wide master switch to be enabled and a successful connection test first. Each connection has its own mode.
What’s Manual vs Auto trading mode?
In Manual, signals wait in Approvals for you to approve each one. In Auto, qualifying signals execute automatically under your risk rules. You can run different connections in different modes.
I set a 5% stop but lost much more — what happened?
Two usual causes: (1) leverage — a 5% price stop at 5× is a 25% loss on margin; check whether your TP/SL basis is “price” or “margin” in Settings. (2) Illiquid markets — on a thin token a stop can fill far past its level (slippage/gaps). We now enforce a 24h-volume floor and bench symbols after repeated losses to prevent this. Trade liquid markets and prefer margin-basis stops if you want a hard cap on margin loss.
My dashboard PnL doesn’t exactly match the exchange.
PnL is net of trading fees (exchange-reported where available, estimated from the taker rate otherwise). Perpetual funding payments settle directly on the exchange and aren't included, so small differences can remain on positions held across funding windows.

Risk controls & the circuit breaker

The safety limits and how to manage them.

How is my position size decided?
For each signal PatternX risks your Risk-per-trade % of balance and works back from the stop to a size, so a stop-out costs about that amount whatever the instrument. Max trade size then caps it, and leverage only sets the margin locked up. You see the exact size on every signal before it executes.
Trading paused with “daily loss limit reached”. How do I continue?
The daily-loss circuit breaker tripped. Go to Settings → Risk — the “Daily loss circuit breaker” control shows your loss vs the limit and lets you Override for today (keep trading past the limit) or Re-arm. The override auto-clears at UTC midnight. There's also a banner on the Overview when it trips.
What do cooldown and the per-symbol bench do?
After a set number of consecutive losses, new trades pause for a cooldown window. Separately, a single symbol that loses repeatedly in a day is benched until the next UTC day, so one bad market can't drain the account with repeat entries. On the Elite plan, a set of Advanced Safety Halts in Settings lets you tune the per-instrument bench and add more automatic circuit breakers — a daily loss-count halt, a losing-streak lockout, a daily profit lock-in, a losing-day-streak halt and a trailing give-back halt.

Backtesting & the Optimization Lab

Testing strategies on history.

How does backtesting work?
It replays the exact same detection engine over historical candles bar by bar, simulating each signal to TP/SL with realistic costs (taker fees, slippage, funding) and leverage-aware liquidation. You get win rate, profit factor, drawdown, Sharpe/Sortino, expectancy, an out-of-sample split, a Monte-Carlo outcome range and a buy-and-hold benchmark — plus an AI written analysis.
What does the Optimization Lab do, and why isn’t the top row just the highest return?
It sweeps a grid of TP/SL/confidence values, running a full backtest for each, and ranks them by robustness(out-of-sample return, Sharpe, worst-case Monte-Carlo, drawdown and sample size) — not raw return — so an overfit winner can't top the table. You can apply the best config to your live settings in one click.
Can I backtest stocks/forex?
Yes, from the Traditional Markets page. Because brokers have no public data feed, those runs pull candles through your own connected broker account, so you need a connected broker with data access.

Plans & billing

Subscriptions, trials and payments.

What do the plans include and what does a trial give me?
Higher plans unlock more tracked markets, faster scanning, advanced backtesting and the Optimization Lab. The Starter plan includes a 48-hour free trial; Pro and Elite do not include free time. See Pricing for the current details.
How do I pay, upgrade, downgrade or cancel?
Manage everything under Billing in the dashboard. Payments are handled by our crypto payment processor. Changing plans takes effect immediately; access continues until the end of a paid period.
A payment didn’t credit my account.
Crypto payments confirm on-chain and can take a few minutes. If it's been longer, email support@patternx.io with the transaction hash and we'll reconcile it.

Troubleshooting & account

When something looks wrong.

The site feels laggy or a page won’t load.
Try a hard refresh first. Persistent slowness right after a deploy usually settles within a few minutes as caches warm. If a specific page errors, note what it says and contact us — the error text tells us exactly where to look.
“The scanner engine isn’t reporting in.” What does that mean?
The background worker that runs scanning and trade management isn't sending heartbeats — no new signals or automatic trades will happen until it's back. This is on our side; if it persists, let us know.
I’m not getting notifications / emails.
Check Settings → Notifications (in-app, email, Telegram, push toggles per type). For email, look in spam and confirm your address is verified. For Telegram, make sure you've linked your chat ID. For phone push, allow notifications when prompted.
How do I reset my password or enable 2FA?
Use “Forgot password” on the login page for a reset link. Enable two-factor authentication under Settings — you'll scan a QR code with an authenticator app and confirm a code.
How do I delete my account or data?
Email support@patternx.io from your account address and we'll remove your account and associated data. Disconnect exchange keys first if you want them revoked immediately.

Security & privacy

How we protect you.

What can PatternX access with my keys?
Only what the key permits — market data, balances and placing/closing trades. Create keys with withdrawals disabled. We recommend IP-restricting keys to our servers where the exchange supports it.
Is my data isolated from other users?
Yes. Every request is scoped to your account, and database access is locked down so no user can reach another's data. If you ever see something that looks like someone else's data, stop and report it to us immediately.

Still stuck?

We read every message. Email us or start a chat from the dashboard — replies land in your notifications and support chat.
