Introducing Momentum Lab: Catch the Move While It’s Happening

Momentum Lab watches premarket US stocks for real price moves and can execute your configured momentum strategies automatically. How it works — and what a trailing stop can and cannot do.

By the PatternX team · Published · Updated

Some of the sharpest repricing of the trading day happens before most people are at their desks. Between 4:00 and 9:30 AM New York time, US stocks react to earnings, guidance, filings and overnight headlines — frequently several at once, frequently within minutes. By the opening bell, a large part of the move can already be in the price.

Momentum Lab is PatternX's answer to that window. It scans extended-hours movers lists, refreshed every 15 seconds, for significant price movements, tracks qualifying opportunities in real time and can execute your configured momentum strategies automatically. It is part of the Elite plan, and it was built around one idea: the market moves before the bell, and PatternX is already watching.

The Edge Is Attention, Not Prediction

It is worth being precise about what software can and cannot do here. Momentum Lab does not know which stock will run, and it does not forecast where a move will end. Nothing does. What it offers is narrower — and it is something software genuinely does better than people:

  • It monitors many instruments at once. The top 50 gainers and 50 losers from each data source, refreshed every 15 seconds through the extended-hours session — not the handful of tickers one person can keep on screen.
  • It reacts to configured conditions immediately. When a genuine move meets your trigger and passes your filters, the action you configured happens right away, not after someone notices it.
  • It maintains deterministic state. Every symbol has an explicit, recorded state, so the same move cannot produce two entries, and every decision can be traced afterwards.
  • It has no attention limits. It does not tire, hesitate or get distracted at 6:45 AM.

That last point cuts both ways. Software executes exactly what it is told — which is why the configuration, and testing it in Paper first, matters as much as the engine.

Three Strategies, Every Threshold Yours

Momentum Lab ships with three strategies. Each runs on its own settings, its own limits and its own statistics.

Premarket Momentum Breakout

The primary strategy. It watches US stocks in premarket and measures each one against a reference price — by default the previous official regular-session close. By default it enters when a stock crosses +5.00%, then exits on a 0.50% trailing distance from the highest price reached after the fill. It also refuses to chase: a stock that is already past the trigger the first time it is seen has to pull back below the trigger before it can trigger.

Momentum Reversal

Extreme premarket movers do not always keep going. Momentum Reversal looks for the ones that start to turn — extreme gainers turning down and extreme losers turning up. By default a stock qualifies once its premarket move reaches 8%, and triggers when price comes back 1.5% from its premarket extreme. Minimum volume, minimum price and maximum spread are configurable, an AI filter is optional, and short entries only happen where your broker allows short selling.

Opening Momentum Continuation

Some premarket moves carry through the open; many do not. This strategy follows strong premarket movers — by default 5% or more — into the 9:30 AM ET open and waits for the confirmation you choose: a premarket-high breakout, an opening-range breakout, a hold above a premarket level, or the VWAP relationship where data allows, alongside spread, liquidity and volume checks. Its default exit is a 0.5% trail.

Every threshold is configurable per strategy: trigger, direction, price range, volume, premarket volume, relative volume, spread, simultaneous positions, symbol exclusions and exchanges. Position sizing can be fixed dollars, a percentage of available capital, a percentage of the portfolio or a fixed number of shares, with caps on position value, total exposure, daily entries and per-symbol exposure. Exits range from the trailing distance to a hard emergency stop, a take-profit (or none, trailing indefinitely), time-based exits and rules for whether to leave before the regular open or continue into it.

From Scan to Exit

Every Momentum Lab trade follows the same six steps:

  1. Scan — watch the stocks on the movers lists against their reference price.
  2. Detect — a real move crosses the trigger on fresh market data.
  3. Confirm — data quality, liquidity, risk and capacity checks pass.
  4. Enter — an extended-hours-compatible order goes to your broker, simulated in Paper or real in Live.
  5. Trail — the exit follows the highest price reached since the fill.
  6. Exit — the trail is hit and the exit order is sent.

Behind those steps, each symbol moves through deterministic states: WATCHING, ARMED, TRIGGERED, ORDER_PENDING, PARTIALLY_FILLED, OPEN, EXIT_PENDING, CLOSED, COOLDOWN or SKIPPED. A stock that crosses its trigger twice finds its existing state rather than a fresh one, so it is not entered twice unless your re-entry rules allow it. All of it runs on New York exchange time rather than your device's clock, with daylight saving, weekends, exchange holidays and shortened sessions handled for you.

What a 0.5% Trail Does — and Does Not — Do

This is the most important part of this article, so it is worth saying plainly: a trailing distance is not a loss limit.

A 0.5% trail decides when PatternX starts exiting. It does not decide the price the exit gets. In extended hours, liquidity is thin and spreads are wide. A stock can gap straight through the trail level on a single print. Orders can be rejected or only partly filled, and brokers restrict which order types they accept outside the regular session. Any of these can produce a realized exit that is materially different from the trail level. A 0.5% trail does not guarantee a maximum 0.5% loss, and it does not guarantee a 0.5% give-back.

A concrete example: a position fills at $10.00 and climbs to $10.80, so a 0.5% trail sits at about $10.75. If the next trade prints at $10.60 after sudden news, the exit goes out immediately — and fills around $10.60 or lower, roughly 1.9% below the high rather than 0.5%.

How the trail is protected depends on your settings and your broker. The trail rests at the broker, and the position is labelled Broker Native, only when all of these hold: you are in Live mode, "prefer native trailing" is on with a trail above zero, the entry filled during the regular session, the broker supports native trailing stops then, the session policy does not continue into after-hours, and the hard emergency stop is 0. Otherwise — including with the default 3% hard stop — PatternX runs the PatternX Synthetic Trail: it tracks the high-water mark continuously on its servers and sends an extended-hours-compatible exit order the moment the trail is hit. In Live mode, an emergency stop-limit order at the hard-stop level also rests at the broker wherever the broker accepts stops in that session. The high-water mark is stored server-side, so it survives a restart.

Guardrails Built for Extended Hours

Premarket is not simply the regular session with fewer people. It needs its own safety machinery:

  • No fresh data, no trade. Entries are blocked when market data is stale, against a threshold you set. Every quote carries its timestamp, source, bid/ask, last trade, session and freshness.
  • A Market Cap Safety Filter, checked first. Every strategy has a minimum market cap: $100M+ (Broad, higher risk), $500M+ (Balanced, the recommended default) or $2B+ (Large Cap, more selective). It is checked before any other rule, so the default configuration does not automatically enter very small companies, where liquidity, spreads and volatility are hardest. A stock whose market cap is unknown or out of date is never entered automatically. It shows as "Skipped — Market cap unavailable".
  • Liquidity filters, with reasons. Maximum spread, minimum quote size, minimum volume and dollar volume, minimum price, and optional halt and volatility-pause detection. A stock that fails is shown as "Skipped — Liquidity Filter", together with the reason.
  • Paper first, Live on purpose. Paper and Live run identical strategy logic; only the execution adapter differs. Going Live requires an explicit typed confirmation, and the current mode is always shown prominently.
  • A real kill switch. STOP MOMENTUM TRADING immediately disables new entries, cancels eligible pending entry orders, keeps existing positions visible, and lets you choose separately whether to exit them.
  • Automatic circuit breakers. Max daily loss, max strategy loss, max consecutive losses, max number of trades, max aggregate exposure, market-data failure, broker-connection failure and an execution-error threshold.

Where AI Fits — and Where It Never Does

PatternX AI is optional in Momentum Lab, and it follows the same rule as everywhere else on the platform: the deterministic engine detects, the AI evaluates. The market-data engine must first detect a genuine price move. Only then can PatternX AI rank or filter it, using volume, relative volume, liquidity, spread, volatility, market (SPY) movement and, with Alpaca data, news or catalyst context. It never manufactures a price event.

Measure Every Version, Test Before the Bell

For each strategy, Momentum Lab reports trades, win rate, average win and loss, profit factor, expectancy, net P&L, maximum drawdown, average hold time, average slippage, best and worst trade, maximum favorable and adverse excursion, and premarket versus regular-session results. Crucially, results are attributed to the exact parameter version in force at the time. Move the trigger from 5% to 7%, or the trail from 0.5% to 1%, and that is a new version — two different strategies never blur into one set of numbers.

Where your data source provides extended-hours history, you can backtest before risking anything, comparing grids such as entry thresholds of 3, 5, 7 and 10% against trailing distances of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 2%, with liquidity, volume and opening-confirmation filters on top. Where that history does not exist, nothing is fabricated to fill the gap. And as always, past results do not guarantee future results.

What You Need to Start

Momentum Lab is part of the Elite plan; every other plan can open a preview, but cannot enable paper or live execution. It works from your connected broker's market data — Interactive Brokers, or an Alpaca account with a real-time consolidated feed — or from a supported premium data provider, and it never trades on scraped web pages. Real-time premarket data generally requires a real-time market-data entitlement with your broker or provider, so check yours first.

The full reference — every parameter, with its default — is in the Momentum Lab guide at /guide/momentum-lab. Start in Paper, read every default, and watch how your rules behave in a real premarket before deciding whether any of it belongs in Live. Trading involves risk of loss, and extended-hours trading carries more of it.
